Insomnia guide

NEC Birmingham, B40 1NT
All you need to know about attending Insomnia Gaming Festival!

Information

To help you prepare for your trip to the Insomnia Gaming Festival we have made this helpful guide to tell you what to expect or bring with you. You can use our shortcut buttons on the left (or above on mobile) to find key subjects or visit our Camping or BYOC guides for specific info.

Insomnia is usually held in halls 1-5 of the NEC in Birmingham. Car parks are generally a bit of a walk away but there is a short-stay drop-off car park nearer to the doors. Parking is £5 for the whole weekend for BYOC ticket holders, for day and weekend ticket holders it is £5 per day. Parking must be booked prior to arriving. See our full site map for car park locations (expect E1 for BYOC at i72).

Make sure to keep yourself healthy and fresh by staying hydrated, showering regularly (deodorant is not a substitute for showering), and eating at least one good meal a day over the event. It’s the best way to stave off the dreaded lan flu! If your body is struggling then it’s gonna be easy for you to pick up a lurgy over the weekend, so look after yourself.

Remember to check out our Discord, more information is available in our #frequently-asked-questions forum.

This is a community-curated guide, written from experience and available sources. While we endeavor to keep it as up-to-date as possible, we can sometimes be unaware of minor changes if Insomnia has not announced them in advance, some changes may take time to be reflected in our guides. take everything with a pinch of salt!

Attending with Bean

If you’re arriving on Thursday, join us at our convenient meeting spot from midday. This is where we can gather and watch each other’s belongings while we check in and grab our wristbands. If you are in a hotel now is the best time to take any luggage that doesn’t need to go to BYOC and set up there too.

Around 15:00 the bulk of our campers will move to camping together where we will locate the reserved Bean Dynamic plot. Those arriving later can ask at the camping desk for our clan and will be pointed to our plot, we will also post its location and tag those with the camping role in our Discord!

After camping is set up, those that want to can move their PC equipment through security into the BYOC hold ready for a quick start into gaming when BYOC opens at 18:00. Best be ready as our group meal is at 19:00.

The basics

There are a few useful all round tips to note in order to ensure your trip to Insomnia is successful.

Firstly, NEC food is expensive so you may want to bring some food with you to keep yourself topped up. You can generally eat breakfast and lunch out of your own snacks, but buying one fresh hot meal a day will prevent you from getting ill. We have a section about food retailers on site here.

Ticket types

Below are graphics showing what each of the main attendance tickets gets you. Check out our camping and pub quiz pages to find out more about some of the ticket addons you can get (these need to be bought separately and are not included in your main event ticket).

Most Beans attend as BYOC, but we still welcome day and weekend ticketers that wish to hang out with us. Just know if you wish to enter the BYOC hall you will need to get a BYOC guest pass from one of our BYOC attendees (see the FAQ on this page for more info)!

Bean recommends you buy BYOC standard or Plus tickets, as these allow you to sit with the rest of the clan. We are still happy to hang out with BYOC Premium and VIP attendees but your ticket type means you cannot sit with us and your desk will be in a different area of the hall.

Both weekend standard and weekend priority can now access hall 4 after hours. Priority weekend ticket holders can redeem their camping tickets from Thursday, standard weekend can camp from Friday. Both types of weekend ticket can only redeem their event tickets from Friday.
If weekend ticket holders wish to hang out in BYOC on the Thursday evening, they can pay an additional £20 at check-in to get a guest band on that night (else guest bands are free from Friday morning).

Remember that the refund protection is practically a scam, we do not recommend you buy it, read the full insurance T&Cs and see if it would apply to you! However, BYOC tickets are refundable up to 45 days before the event as standard.

FAQ

What do I get with my BYOC Ticket?

1) A desk

2) A chair

3) A power supply (one socket) for your PC and at least 1 monitor

4) An ethernet connection

Key facts:
Desks are 3ft by 2ft (4ft by 2ft for Premium and VIP). Under 16s must always be supervised by an adult in the BYOC area. You MUST bring a surge-protected extension lead with you to protect your PC when in BYOC. You can rent a PC from Insomnia if you don’t feel like bringing your own.

What do I get with my Camping Ticket?

Each camping ticket gives you a wristband that admits 1 person to the camping hall. You are allocated 2.6×1.6m (or 4.16m2) of space to set up a tent.

Minimum age 16

If you buy camping for 4 you do not need to camp with the other people you bought the ticket with

You may combine several plots if multiple people wish to share a larger tent, but each person must have their own camping ticket.

Help me! I'm having trouble with the Insomnia seat picker

The seat picker is only for BYOC customers to choose seats in the BYOC hall, if you are a weekend ticket holder it won’t work for you.
If you are a BYOC ticket holder and are trying to sign up make sure your booking reference is correct and you are signing up with the same email your tickets were emailed to (if you paid via PayPal try the email linked to that).

If you already have an account but do not see your tickets, check your tickets were sent to the same email as the one linked to your seat picker account. If they were, try downloading your tickets then check again.

If you are trying to register a new account, check that Insomnia has announced the release of the seat picker for the current event. If it has not, then the software will not recognise your booking reference and you will be unable to create a new account. Keep an eye on Insomnia social channels and #announcements in Bean Dynamic for updates!

If you are still having issues contact the bot in the Insomnia Discord server.

Will they release more seats on the seat picker?

The amount of open seats on the seat picker is linked to the number of tickets sold. There is no guarantee of more seats but normally there is at least 1 small extra release of seats, keep an eye on the Insomnia discord for any announcements.

When should I buy my rentals and will there be more once they have sold out?

Once they have been released, PC and monitor rentals typically sell out in 3 to 6 weeks. There has not been a second release in recent years so if you are relying on a rental I recommend putting the money to buy rentals aside in advance. Then you can buy them as soon as they go on sale and do not have to wait for a payday.

Can I bring my fridge, kettle, microwave, tumble-dryer or other appliance of choice and plug it in at lan?

Nope, sorry! Only PCs and monitors are to be plugged into your power supply at lan! We might let you off for using your phone charger though…

Where can I park my car?

The car park for i72 is car park E1 (near gate 1 at the NEC). Parking is £5 for the weekend for BYOC customers and per day for weekend and day ticket holders. You can enter and leave the car park as you please once you have your parking pass.
Parking must be paid in advance on the NEC website, if you are BYOC you ONLY NEED TO PAY FOR THE DAY YOU ARRIVE.

The car park is quite a distance from the Piazza entrance (where the event is). Shuttle buses should be running at peak times for arrival and departures but I still advise using a trolley to transport big items.

At gate 1 there is a 30-minute drop-off point (open from 4pm) that you may find easier to use, as well as the disabled car park if you are blue badge holder, and VIP parking. NEC security at the gate can be reluctant to let you into the drop-off point so be prepared to argue your way in.

I've decided I want to upgrade my ticket, how do i do this?

If what you want is Thursday check-in, you can now pay £20 on the day at check-in if you have a standard BYOC ticket to be able to collect your wristbands. Standard weekenders can also pay this at check-in to camp from Thursday.

Weekend ticket holders may also pay an additional £20 to get a guest pass for BYOC access from Thursday evening. Usual guest pass limitations apply (see the relevant section in our FAQ)

If you wish to officially upgrade your ticket (such as upgrading to priority weekend to collect your goody bag), then you can contact Seetickets at https://www.seetickets.com/customerservice and request an upgrade. Bear in mind they may ask you to purchase a new priority ticket before they refund your standard one.

What facilities will I find in the camping hall?

The camping hall will contain at least 2 shower blocks and access to the built-in NEC toilets. Each shower block is split into 2 rooms with a changing room and 3 individual shower cubicles (making a minimum 12 total showers in the hall). The showers are gender separated, and generally clean.
There are also breakfasts available from the cafe in the hall.
There are a couple of power sockets on the outer walls that you can use to inflate airbeds, however, you cannot use these for phones so you should either charge at your BYOC desk or bring a portable power pack.

What is a BYOC guest pass and how do I get one?

BYOC guest passes allow BYOC customers to bring up to 2 friends with day or weekend tickets into the BYOC hall.

To get your band, bring your friend (and their ID) to the BYOC help desk in hall 4 and simply ask! You will have to sign a sheet to register them as a guest and they will be given a wristband that will let them enter and exit BYOC, as long as they have a valid event ticket for that day.
Guest passes are subject to availability: when they’re gone, they’re gone.

Will I be able to stream in BYOC?

Streaming is permitted in BYOC and the internet is good enough to sustain it. However, if you are streaming with your camera on then you should check that the people surrounding you are comfortable in case they do not want to be in shot.

Can I enter more than 1 tournament?

You may enter more than 1 tournament as long as they are not running at the same time. All tournament sign-ups are released at once and include a rough schedule. You can check the tournaments you are interested in against each other and see if they clash!

Where can I eat at the event?

There are several eateries dotted around the NEC area as well as the delivery to desk service in BYOC. To find out more see our food and drink section

Do I need to print my ticket?

No, you are fine showing your ticket on a brightly lit phone. Save your ticket to an email folder or drive to prevent you losing them and you’re helping the environment by wasting less paper!
